A mindfulness-based program designed to assist people with pain, medical conditions, and life issues
AUSTIN, Texas – February 1, 2016 – Austin Pain Associates (APA), a leader in pain management in central Texas, is pleased to announce that it will be offering a new eight-week Restoring Balance program that is designed to assist people with pain, medical conditions and life issues. The program uses a combination of mindfulness meditation, body awareness/yoga, coping skills and group dialogue to help people learn to live with chronic medical conditions. Those interested in the program are encouraged to speak to their medical or behavioral health provider at Austin Pain Associates for a referral. The program costs $250 if paid up-front, or it is $37.50 per week.
“Those attending the eight-week Restoring Balance program will learn how to cope with stress, pain, and the challenges of everyday life,” said Bruno G. Lepore, M.A., LPC-S, Director of Behavioral Health Services for APA. “Participants will also learn how to deal with disturbing events, and to be present and in the moment.”
Each weekly session will last three hours and include 15 minutes of mindfulness; 30 minutes of coping skills training; one hour of yoga; a one hour process group/experiential exercise; and 15 minutes for completing a mindfulness journal. Topics include Learning to Accept in week one; Being Present in week two; Finding Your Purpose in week three; Dealing with Distress in week four; Creating a New You in week five; Making Stress Your Friend in week six; Self-Care in week seven; and Happiness in week eight. The program is being led by Shannon Rae Prescher, LMSW.
Lepore added, “Research has shown that mindfulness meditation reduces both the experience of pain and its inhibition of patients’ everyday activities. Additionally, mood disturbance and psychological symptomatology (including anxiety and depression) are also reduced with mindfulness meditation. Pain-related drug utilization was decreased and activity levels and self-esteem increased. This was in marked contrast to a traditional pain clinic comparison group, which showed no change on these dimensions. These gains were nearly all maintained at a four-year follow-up.”
The Restoring Balance program will be offered at Austin Pain Associates’ Round Rock office, located at 7200 Wyoming Springs Drive, Suite 400, Round Rock, Texas. Classes will be held weekly from 9 a.m. to noon starting on Friday, February 5. Participants must commit to attend each session.
