FDA Approves Generic Suboxone.
Hi. I’m Kelli D. and I have been working with Arizona Pain Specialists for about 5 years. I love reading and researching everything in the medical world and sharing with others.
As I was perusing the blogosphere and medical news, I came across an interesting find.
A new report states officials at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced two weeks ago that generic version of Suboxone will be allowed in the US.
What does this mean for you?
Suboxone, a drug manufactured by the British pharmaceutical giant Reckitt Benckiser, can be used to help those addicted to opioids.
Opioid dependence is now considered one of the largest public health crises in the United States (among other developed nations.)
To date, Suboxone has been an expensive option for those in need of help. Often not covered by insurance, the drug regiment requires close supervision by a physician.
Suboxone (buprenophin) was first approved in the US in 2002. Some 3 million Americans have been treated with the drug to date for opioid dependence.
The new generic versions, one underway by the largest generic drug manufacturer in the US, should be on the market soon.
Generic drugs are typically less expensive, and may be covered by insurance.
Regardless of the generic or brand name, public health officials have issued additional warnings about Suboxone.
A recent study found emergency room visits had increased ten times over for Suboxone-related admissions.
There is concern some patients may be now using this drug to get high.
